What is a cataract?
A cataract is the progressive clouding of the lens, the natural lens inside the eye. It causes blurred vision, glare sensitivity, dulled colours and sometimes double vision.
It is common after the age of 60. The only treatment is surgical: the clouded lens is replaced with a clear intraocular implant.

The clouded lens is broken up with ultrasound and gently removed through a micro-incision.

A clear intraocular implant is placed where the lens was.

Which implant?
The procedure is covered by national health insurance. Premium implants (toric for astigmatism, multifocal for presbyopia) can reduce dependence on glasses but involve out-of-pocket costs. The choice is discussed together, and a detailed quote is provided before surgery.
Frequently asked questions.
Is cataract surgery painful?
No. It is performed under local anaesthetic (eye drops), as a day case. The eye is numbed and the procedure usually takes about fifteen minutes.
Are both eyes operated on at once?
As a rule, the eyes are operated on separately, a few days or weeks apart, to make recovery safer.
Is it reimbursed?
The surgery is covered by French national health insurance at the standard rate. Premium implants and any extra fees are not: a quote is provided beforehand.
When can I resume my activities?
Visual recovery is often quick. Post-operative instructions (drops, protection, activities) are explained at the consultation.
