Cornea: the clear window at the front of the eye. It is the main lens: it is reshaped with a laser in refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK).
Iris: the coloured membrane that adjusts the pupil to control how much light enters.
Pupil: the central opening of the iris; it contracts or dilates depending on brightness.
Lens: the internal lens that focuses. When it clouds, that is a cataract; it is replaced with an implant.
Ciliary body: it produces the aqueous humour and reshapes the lens for focusing.
Sclera: the solid white shell that protects and holds the shape of the eyeball.
Choroid: the richly vascularised layer that nourishes the retina.
Retina: the light-sensitive tissue that turns the image into a nerve signal.
Macula: the central area of the retina, responsible for fine, detailed vision; affected in AMD.
Optic nerve: it carries the image to the brain. Its progressive damage characterises glaucoma.
